Are You Really Ready to Retire? 8 Steps to a Happy Retirement
Private Finance – Are You Really Ready to Retire? 8 Steps to a Pleased Retirement
Last year, Nick Crisci felt more than ready to retire. After working nonstop for 46 years, the 69-year-ancient feared the stress of his in rank equipment job was distressing his health. Crisci, who lives in Pflugerville, Tex., set for retirement by thumping his finances into shape–paying off his finance and shifting some of his funds into Reserves bills to make a cash cushion. He also envisioned how he’d spend his days in retirement: farming, reading, playing with his grandkids and working on his stamp pool.
But all that schooling didn’t make the transition simple. Since his November 2018 retirement, he has focused on staying busy, getting caught up with his homeowners friendship, joining a senior union center and taking tai chi classes. But “it’s not fun yet,” he says. “I feel tired, not retired.” And the recent market dip has further hurt his confidence. “I’m sitting here thought, ‘How long will it take to recover from this?’ ” he says. “Did I pick the incorrect time to retire?”
Even with years of schooling, retirement can be a demoralizing possibility. Can your choice survive a market crash in your early retirement years? Will you still have a sense of purpose when you’re no longer heading to the office every day? How do you know that you’re really ready–both financially and mentally?
To ensure a flourishing retirement transition, you’ll need to tackle those questions and many more. But the process doesn’t have to be aloof. Follow these eight steps to ensure you’re set–financially and mentally–to retire.
